Community Needs

As the senior population throughout Muskegon, Muskegon Heights, rural communities, and surrounding West Michigan continues to grow, transportation challenges affecting older adults are becoming increasingly common. These challenges are especially significant in rural and outlying areas of Muskegon County, where limited transportation options can make it difficult for seniors to access medical care, grocery stores, pharmacies, and other essential services.

Many seniors — especially those living on fixed incomes, facing mobility limitations, or lacking reliable family support — struggle to access safe, dependable, FREE or affordable transportation for essential daily living needs.

Transportation barriers continue to limit access to:

Grocery shopping
Pharmacies
Wellness services
Essential errands
Community and social activities

For many older adults, transportation limitations can contribute to:

Missed medical appointments
Social isolation
Reduced independence
Difficulty accessing food and medications
Increased physical and emotional stress

Community outreach and regional transportation assessment efforts conducted by Cadillac Inc. and Senior Shop and Ride Share have identified growing concerns related to:

Transportation demand exceeding existing capacity
Limited evening and weekend transportation availability
Accessibility and wheelchair transportation shortages
Volunteer and driver shortages
Non-medical transportation gaps
Limited FREE and affordable transportation options
Flexible and individualized transportation needs

Many seniors continue to experience difficulty securing reliable transportation for both medical and non-medical needs, particularly transportation that is affordable, accessible, and community-focused.

Senior Shop and Ride Share was developed to help support ongoing community efforts aimed at improving FREE and affordable transportation access, strengthening community support systems, and helping seniors remain safe, connected, independent, and actively engaged within the communities they call home.

The transportation barriers identified were gathered through community outreach and stakeholder engagement.
